Experience
I'm Laetitia Wan, 22 years old.
I was raised with English being my first language, and had continuously scored A+ (which is marks 85 and above) in all of my English examinations, including Essay, Listening, and Oral assessments. I had achieved an A+ in SPM for English, and I am currently in my final year of completing my Law Degree.
For the past 2 years, I have been a tutor to 5 children. The first was in 2022, where I taught an 8-year-old Korean boy English, focusing especially in areas of his speech, pronunciation, and vocabulary. By the end of the tutoring period, he could order food by himself, and understand what others were saying to him.
In 2023, I had taught 4 Korean children, within the ages of 9-12. I had also focused on talking to them; by guiding them on how to converse with one another in English, teaching them a wide range of vocabulary, so that they have a better understanding of the English language, and also coaching them in writing Essays suited to their age and English level.
My style of teaching is a mixture of teaching and tutoring in a responsible manner, with also a hint of fun and playfulness. In a typical 1-hour class, I tend to practice Speech for the first 30 minutes, then on Essays or Spelling for the next 20 minutes (Please take note this is customized based on the child's own shortcomings and specific areas that the parent would like to see improvements in the child's English). The last 10 minutes is to revise the syllabus the child and I had gone through for the day, and this is normally done in the form of games, like Jenga or UNO. I like playing games with my students at the end, as it allows them to de-stress and also understand that the English language and myself, as the English tutor, shouldn't be scary, but a fun experience.
I believe that I am a good tutor to young children of ages 7-17; this is due to the fact that I am based in Malaysia, and thus, I am experienced in the English syllabus taught in schools in Malaysia, as I had to go through UPSR, PT3, SPM, and other school-based assessments myself, and had invariably scored A+ in all of them. I am confident that I can guide my students to score well in their own English assessments.
Tutoring Approach
I believe that tutoring is a job that requires passion and gentle guidance. As a tutor, I am motivated to see my students improve and become more confident and open in speaking English to others. I tend to push my students to talk more, share their opinions, and thoughts with me in English so that I can understand them better and help them enhance their grammar and vocabulary to have a better grasp of how speech works in English. However, I do understand that some students are shy or may even suffer from anxiety. When I encounter students like this, I tend to teach and talk slower and softer, giving more time for the student to answer my questions based on their comfort level.
Before the tutoring period starts, I usually sit down with the parents to inquire about their concerns regarding their child's English. I then note down specific areas for improvement, such as vocabulary or essays, and work out a schedule on different topics and subjects that the child and I can tackle during the tutoring period.
I understand a parent's worry when their child is lacking in a language, so I strive to push the child to improve and cultivate an attitude that helps develop and enhance their English skills. For example, I may suggest reading English newspapers or novels suited to their age and reading level.
I believe that every student is special and unique, so lesson plans will differ for each student. My lesson plans are based on their shortcomings or what the parents want to see improved in their child's grasp of the English language.
My fees are as follows:
1. Teaching Fees: RM30 for 1 hour for 1 child.
2. Transportation Fees: based on Grab, to and from my home to the parent's preferred place of study.
3. Materials Fees: depends on the materials needed. For example, if the child needs to improve in reading, I will bring my own books for them to read in class at no extra charge. However, if the child needs to improve in essays or spelling, I will print out the questions, and this additional amount will be covered as Materials Fees by the parent.
