Studying for examinations is about understanding the basics of the subject, and learn the techniques to answer the examination questions. Nothing can be learnt without a good basics. I usually start by learning about the students' background during the first few classes and preparing some basic assignments for the students to answer. This will help me gauge the students' mastery and understanding of the subject. I believe that actual learning starts from interest, thus building the students' interest in the subject is necessary. I prefer to make sure my student to have a strong basic on the subject then I will intensively give them tonnes of necessary exercise question. Noted that this apply on mathematis and additional mathematics subjects as those are the subjects I preferred. I believe unless we are a genius in maths, answering a lot of exercise questions are very important, only after the basics is strong.
