Tutoring Approach

The key to success in subjects such as Economics and Business is to have a thorough understanding of the material. Memorising definitions and concepts word for word is highly discouraged. Questions are constantly changing from year to year, as such, making sure that students have the skill to apply theory to different questions and scenarios is my top priority. I identify major key points and concepts of a chapter, and methodically explain them step by step with breaks in between for questions. I make concepts easy to understand by using relevant and relatable examples. I sprinkle in real life examples, current events and updated statistics as well, which students can use to enhance their answers, especially for essay or extended response questions. Stickman drawings are my forte, and have been proven to be exceptionally useful for students to understand complicated topics such as bonds and investments. Combining relatable examples, current events, stickman drawings and plain English explanations, students are able to grasp concepts with ease. My students are exposed to a variety of past year questions, usually after every topic. They are drilled with every section tested in their exams, commonly multiple choice questions (MCQs), short and extended response questions. I provide detailed feedback on homework completed by my students, mainly for subjective or open-ended questions, and explanations for any confusing MCQs. Closer towards exam periods, I carry out time-based practice, to hone my students’ time management skills, which then allows them identify areas of weakness. I cover topics which the student is not too confident in, so no time is wasted explaining something they already know, unless requested. My lessons are a safe space where students are encouraged to ask questions, ensuring there are no gaps in their knowledge of the subject. I have my own resources and materials, accumulated throughout my teaching career which will be provided exclusively to my students. A key benefit my students have is that they can message me at any time to ask for help outside our tuition sessions.

My students love my classes because of the way I relate textbook concepts/theories with real life applications and how I decipher them into something that even a primary school student would be able to understand; they always tell me that their teachers have never make things this easy to understand. Mathematics and Statistics, once you understand them, you will see the point of learning them and know how much sense they could make! Besides, when it comes closer to exams, I'll focus on teach techniques or smarter ways to hack the marking scheme! I started teaching 1on1 math classes when I was in college. I also had a short period where I taught an entire tuition class for physics. Then when I started my degree I gave home tuition where I would travel to students' homes to give 1on1 classes in Math, Addmath and Physics for F4, F5 and A Levels. I graduated with Dean's Award and First Class Honors in an EE Engineering Degree. I'm now working flexible hours at an MNC as a SOC engineer, so I'm looking to fill up my free time with work.

I always start off with laying out the big picture for students in the 1st to 2nd class. The big picture includes the syllabus, each section (I would treat them like levels), the timeline we'll take to go over them (depending on exam season, and the student's confidence in the particular topics). Of course this may vary and we'll have to adapt a bit as we go along month by month. In the first month, I usually focus on trying to understand the student's thinking patterns and learning techniques. Some are more susceptible to example based learning, and some need to understand root concepts first. I'll spend the first month trying to understand them by teaching topics that they are confident and unconfident in first. This helps us both to understand each other better before proceeding to actually teach effectively. If a student and teacher can communicate effectively, I believe that is the most efficient way to learn.
