Tutoring Approach

The key to success in subjects such as Economics and Business is to have a thorough understanding of the material. Memorising definitions and concepts word for word is highly discouraged. Questions are constantly changing from year to year, as such, making sure that students have the skill to apply theory to different questions and scenarios is my top priority. I identify major key points and concepts of a chapter, and methodically explain them step by step with breaks in between for questions. I make concepts easy to understand by using relevant and relatable examples. I sprinkle in real life examples, current events and updated statistics as well, which students can use to enhance their answers, especially for essay or extended response questions. Stickman drawings are my forte, and have been proven to be exceptionally useful for students to understand complicated topics such as bonds and investments. Combining relatable examples, current events, stickman drawings and plain English explanations, students are able to grasp concepts with ease. My students are exposed to a variety of past year questions, usually after every topic. They are drilled with every section tested in their exams, commonly multiple choice questions (MCQs), short and extended response questions. I provide detailed feedback on homework completed by my students, mainly for subjective or open-ended questions, and explanations for any confusing MCQs. Closer towards exam periods, I carry out time-based practice, to hone my students’ time management skills, which then allows them identify areas of weakness. I cover topics which the student is not too confident in, so no time is wasted explaining something they already know, unless requested. My lessons are a safe space where students are encouraged to ask questions, ensuring there are no gaps in their knowledge of the subject. I have my own resources and materials, accumulated throughout my teaching career which will be provided exclusively to my students. A key benefit my students have is that they can message me at any time to ask for help outside our tuition sessions.

I have been Tutoring A-level students in Physics and Maths for over 3 years. Almost all my tutees have improvements in their grades. I also worked as demonstrator at the Sheffield 2nd Year laboratories. I trained students to use experimental equipment and programming languages. Throughout my PhD, I worked as a lab and tutorial demonstrator, teaching research skills and imparting knowledge to undergraduate Physics students.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that the approach you take with a tutee must be flexible. Everybody needs to be approached in a slightly different way in order to maximize their ability to approach a problem on their own when the exam comes around. I would always be willing to give a general overview of the part of the syllabus that the tutee is struggling with, but at the end of the day the tutee and I must work to recognise where they feel their weakest areas are, and change that into something they feel confident about. The strongest learning tool available to the tutee and I will always be past paper / textbook problems, but I prefer not to encourage a tutee to simply memorize a solution. I will try my hardest to teach the tutee the answers to the question, but I also intend to teach them where the answer comes from, without overwhelming them. I will start a session with a recap and ask the student if there are any areas they would like to focus on based on their own insight. Every tutorial I run will then contain an overview of the equations and facts the student will need to face that topic. Over time I will expect the student to be able to recall or recite the techniques they will need to face each topic at the start of the session. The rest of the session is an exercise in confidence building - taking the tutee through questions, asking them to identify the problem, and the techniques required to solve the problem, and then taking them through the solution step-by-step.

I started tutoring in 2007. I am experienced in tutoring Mathematics for primary, secondary and test prep either in national syllabus or UK and US syllabus. I have taught IGCSE, IB, algebra, pre-algebra, statistics, geometry and SAT, SAT 2 Math. I am currently pursuing Master of Science majoring in Mathematics. My first class usually will be probing session. In this session, I will probe the student's personal preferences approach. I will also probe contents and skills that are required more attention. Most of my tutoring sessions are 2 hours per session. Usually, I will start my lesson with 2 minutes of mindfulness activities to ensure student's brain ready for the lesson. Then, I will continue with the content part for about 55 minutes. We will have a 5 minutes break to ensure optimize attention from the student. After the break, we will continue with lesson part 2 and end the lesson with an exit ticket where I will probe student's engagement. My approach is different because I apply gradual release method. This method is proven scientifically in engaging students attention and also to create a positive and safe learning environment. I also use declarative language in spotlighting student's achievements. This approach is proven to be more effective as compared to saying general praise. I also adapt EF skills in academic lessons to enhance student's independence.
