I have been Tutoring A-level students in Physics and Maths for over 3 years. Almost all my tutees have improvements in their grades. I also worked as demonstrator at the Sheffield 2nd Year laboratories. I trained students to use experimental equipment and programming languages. Throughout my PhD, I worked as a lab and tutorial demonstrator, teaching research skills and imparting knowledge to undergraduate Physics students.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that the approach you take with a tutee must be flexible. Everybody needs to be approached in a slightly different way in order to maximize their ability to approach a problem on their own when the exam comes around. I would always be willing to give a general overview of the part of the syllabus that the tutee is struggling with, but at the end of the day the tutee and I must work to recognise where they feel their weakest areas are, and change that into something they feel confident about. The strongest learning tool available to the tutee and I will always be past paper / textbook problems, but I prefer not to encourage a tutee to simply memorize a solution. I will try my hardest to teach the tutee the answers to the question, but I also intend to teach them where the answer comes from, without overwhelming them. I will start a session with a recap and ask the student if there are any areas they would like to focus on based on their own insight. Every tutorial I run will then contain an overview of the equations and facts the student will need to face that topic. Over time I will expect the student to be able to recall or recite the techniques they will need to face each topic at the start of the session. The rest of the session is an exercise in confidence building - taking the tutee through questions, asking them to identify the problem, and the techniques required to solve the problem, and then taking them through the solution step-by-step.

1) I worked as a temporary Geography, History and English teacher in Catholic High School from May 2009 to July 2009; 2) I have home tutored students aged 12 to 17; 3) I am currently teaching basic to intermediate level Conversational English and Mandarin to foreign students (non-native speakers) ; 4) I am also teaching Piano to children, teens and adults, from beginner to grade 8 level. 

Tutoring Approach

1) My tutoring approach varies based on the student’s needs. For Primary, Secondary Level, I mainly focus on past year papers and guiding my student with their homework and assignments, in order for them to achieve better understanding in the respective subjects. 2) For adult students, I would assess the student’s reason and aim for learning and then I will design learning plans based on the student’s standard and learning style. I will be focusing mainly on speaking and making conversation (English/Mandarin) as it is the best way to improve his/her speaking ability and in time, be able to express him/herself more and more easily.

I started tutoring in 2007. I am experienced in tutoring Mathematics for primary, secondary and test prep either in national syllabus or UK and US syllabus. I have taught IGCSE, IB, algebra, pre-algebra, statistics, geometry and SAT, SAT 2 Math. I am currently pursuing Master of Science majoring in Mathematics. Prior to that, I graduated with Rector's Award and First class Honour in Bachelor of Mathematical Science. Thus, you can be sure that I am well-versed in extended mathematics content.

Tutoring Approach

My first class usually will be probing session. In this session, I will probe the student's personal preferences approach. I will also probe contents and skills that are required more attention. Most of my tutoring sessions are 2 hours per session. Usually, I will start my lesson with 2 minutes of mindfulness activities to ensure student's brain ready for the lesson. Then, I will continue with the content part for about 55 minutes. We will have a 5 minutes break to ensure optimize attention from the student. After the break, we will continue with lesson part 2 and end the lesson with an exit ticket where I will probe student's engagement. My approach is different because I apply gradual release method. This method is proven scientifically in engaging students attention and also to create a positive and safe learning environment. I also use declarative language in spotlighting student's achievements. This approach is proven to be more effective as compared to saying general praise. I also adapt EF skills in academic lessons to enhance student's independence.

My teaching method focuses on the student weaknesses and through adapted approaches to the student needs. I mainly focus on reading /understanding the language first, through simple exercises to evaluate the student capabilities and then upgrade towards the writing process once the student is comfortable with the reading /understanding. I previously taught foreign students in my university and I always aim quality over quantity as the student satisfaction is my main and only objective.

As I mentioned, I evaluate the student needs so I can determine the methods that fit the best. My lessons are mostly student-centred and the main objective is to help the student feel comfortable having a conversation in a foreign language without fear. My tutoring is basically reading/ understanding through picture/ sounds (for underaged children) and through books for older children, with a focus on vocabulary.
